Entering the Icebox

Temperatures the next four days will be seasonably cool for the middle of January, but by next weekend we will firmly be placed in the icebox. A low will form in southeastern Canada. This type of area of low pressure, known as a "Hudson low" for its close proximity to Hudson Bay, typically causes an arctic outbreak across the midsection of the US. It will tug a polar airmass southward into our area. Temperatures will likely head well below average with wind chills that could easily approach -20°F.

One thing to watch for the rest of this work week will be the snowmakers. If we get a couple of inches of snow to fall between Wednesday and Friday this will cause our temperatures to be even colder than originally forecasted. Remember with a layer of snow on the ground it acts like ice cubes cooling the air off efficiently, while reflecting the sun's rays therefore disallowing the absorption of the heat. -ADAM
