Storm chances go up

While things are pretty quiet out there right now, I am expecting the storms to fire upstream within the next 2-4 hours. The strongest storms will be capable of producing small hail and brief torrential downpours.

A complex of thunderstorms is expected to develop in Neb., S.D., and Iowa late this afternoon. As the sun sets, they will get a nice push to the east affecting us late tonight. If these storms move east, we will have less of a hail threat and more of a damaging wind threat.

That's how it looks right now. Other than the humidity, it is definitely a nice day in Rockford so far. I will have my forecast completed by 4pm today. -ERIC

Do we know how much rain to expect tonight into Friday? I know we need some but hope we don't get into the flash flood warnings again.

There is A LOT of precipitable water in the air. However, speculating what we'll get is moot. Some localized spots could see 2-3 inches, but some areas could see less than an inch through the finale on Saturday morning. In any event, our soil can hold 2-3 inches...so long as it doesn't come all at once. -ERIC
