Watch where you get your weather forecasts!

Dave Collins from Roscoe writes:

"For the past several days, The Weather Channel (and weather.com) has our Saturday forecast temp in Roscoe as 64. I've been watching your foreacst for several days and you have 78 for Rockford (on Saturday). Will there be a 14 degree difference between Roscoe and Rockford?"

Dave: You’ve got a good eye! TWC uses one computer model (GFS) and outputs the forecast in a grid all across the U.S. The GFS certainly has some validity however (I mentioned at five and six that if the rain starts early enough we’ll be in the high 60s and low 70s in the afternoon. The dewpoint temps will be in the mid 60s, so that seems reasonable). Up until a few years ago the TWC used National Weather Service forecasts, but decided to go their own way and use one computer model instead. For reference, I look at six different models before I make my forecast highs and lows. So, will I be right or wrong? It all depends on when the rainfall begins on Saturday. I have a hard time believing that 64 will be the high temp. The last time we had a high that cool was April 27

Thats kind of what I was thinking, that maybe the weather channel just has one model they go by. Do they even have a person forecast it or is it done automatically? Even if they do have a huge group of meteorologists, its hard to forecast the entire country. Its not only 13 news, but I take the local news for forecast anywhere over the weather channel.

Well, well, well it hasn't made it much past 60 today. Looks like the weather channel isn't too shabby after all!
