We're about a week from my birthday (please no surprise blog-birthday party) which got me thinking waaaaay back to my childhood. As was the case more often than not, I hoped to wake up on my birthday and get something bike-related. However there were a few birthdays where my wishes were granted only to have a foot of snow on the ground! On the flip side, I remember many birthdays which were spent outside in 60°+ weather. Either way, growing up in Rockford my birthday weather was memorable! With the help of our friendly National Weather Service office in Chicago, I decided to find out when our last inch of snow usually occurs. In a typical year March 21 brings our last inch of snow. Although back on May 11, 1966 we got an inch of snow (which broke many late-season records).
Now, would you call this a typical year? Heck no!
At the tail end of the major '78/'79 season, March 1979 yielded another 4.5 inches of snow. So far this March we've gotten less than an inch of snow. For some reason, I have a feeling we'll be using the shovels at least one more time this month. -ERIC

*sigh* ... any significant warmups that you can see past the 7 day?
Oh, Eric! Your mention of the May 11, 1966 snow is going to force me to reveal my age...
I was a child living in Lake Geneva then - and I remember that snow!
In what was probably one of the very first signs of my future as a Weather Buff, I remember taking a white posterboard and writing the date in big block letters on it (they didn't have cameras that recorded the date and time back then) and propping it up against a tree stump so that I could take a picture of the tulips covered with snow and have the sign with the date on it in the background.
I wonder what ever happened to that picture...????
omg, your birthday is in March, mine is March 26! And Eric I am holding up it's Ike, I really don't care if my stalker see's me online right now
