Extended forecast: nothing but cold!

No matter where you live in the U.S.A., chances are you're going to be pretty chilled over the next week! The exceptions will be Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Colorado, and New Mexico. We'll start on Monday where a significant surge of cold air brings cold highs 20° below average as far south as Nashville.

On Tuesday the brunt of the cold air shifts into the Mid-Atlantic and New England. The midwest will still be chilly (especially as skies clear and temps tumble at night). The west remains under ridging and remains quite warm. Las Vegas and Reno are the places to be through midweek.

On Wednesday a system will work across Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, and the UP of Michigan. This will allow somewhat milder air to try to sneak into the midwest. Places like Des Moines and Kansas City could be up to 10° warmer than average. However this warming isn't permanent. Look what's up there in the Dakotas...more intense cold!

The cold air spills out of the Dakotas and encompasses about half of the real estate of the lower 48. On Thursday Minneapolis-St. Paul will be the farthest from normal where highs may not get out of the 20s in spots! Even Orlando and Tampa will be chilly with highs in the 60s.

We're rounding out the week with plenty of blue on the map. Notice even how the bright oranges, those 10-20° above average temps, have disappeared from the western United States. Areas farthest from average will be the Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic. Again it appears more than 1/2 of the U.S. will experience below-average temperatures.

Wow can you imagine the bitter arctic airmass that would be over us if this was mid january and we had 5 or more inches of snow on the ground.
