The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
It was on this date in 1975 that the Edmund Fitzgerald went down in Lake Superior.
It was carrying taconite from Duluth to Detroit when it encountered what has become a truly legendary Great Lakes gale. Ships traversing the Lakes has to alter their routes since the Soo Locks were closed. The Edmund Fitzgerald took a path through Whitefish Bay. Those who have heard of Whitefish Bay probably are aware of its status, so to speak, as a "shipwreck graveyard."
Low visibility due to wind-driven heavy snow, along with very rough water, made the journey difficult. The ship reported taking on water, but no distress signal was received before it sank.
