Earthquake!!!

Update 10:30am = A few aftershocks have been felt all morning long after the initial tremor. The most recent was at 10:14am 8 miles east of West Salem, IL. It registered a 4.5 on the Richter Scale.

If you felt some shaking this morning you weren't alone. The United States Geological Survey says a 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit West Salem, Illinois this morning at 4:36am. This town is in southern Illinois near the Indiana border. It was felt as far away as Ohio, Tennessee, Missouri and right here in the Stateline. Many folks from Amboy, Mount Morris, Roscoe, Kent, Capron, Machesney Park, Loves Park and Rockford have called in this morning saying that they were woken up by the tremor. No injuries or major damage has been reported thus far. Now I am not a seismologist, but that is a pretty rare occurrence for these parts!

One weatherman was live on-air checking out their weathercam when the earthquake hit. To see the footage click here for WFIE-TV, our sister station in Evansville, IN. Once there check out the video option "14 Sunrise shows earthquake live". -ADAM

I did not get awaken by the tremor nor did I feel it and I am in loves park also. That is strange to have a earthquake around here, but I guess it can happen with the new madrid fault.

Seems like every few years we get a little one. I watched the whole thing and I think I want to steal their 7 day forecast.

Actually the one that happened a few years ago that hit around 1 in the morning, I had just woken up very briefly and heard my lock on my door rattle but I figured it was just someone moving around then woke up in the morning to find out an earthquake had happened. But this one, I did not feel or hear.

My dogs woke me up several hours before the quake. They were pacing around and basically acting like something was outside (I was thinking: coyote?, prowler?).

I actually got up and checked 2x to see what was making them restless. Seeing nothing, I was starting to get annoyed with the dogs.

When the quake happened it was just about the time I should have been getting up, but having been awake a bunch already I was just kind of snoozing. I thought I was dreaming that I was back in Southern California where I lived for several years and where there used to be little earthquakes all the time (and probably still are).

Then I realized that maybe I wasn't dreaming, ("Huh?") maybe I was awake. My thought process went, "Was I just really awake? Did we actually have a little earthquake? Here? Or was that a dream? I dunno. Oh, dang; its time to get up."

I heard on the radio on the way to work that there had been an earthquake. That kind of explained a lot.

I still don't know what the dogs were reacting to. Maybe there was an earthquake and a coyote prowling around outside. Who knows...
