Right On Cue

If this past weekend was the unofficial end to summer, then Mother Nature sure spoiled us with one last summery blast of warm air. In fact, it seems as though she is sending us a bonus day of heat as well with highs this afternoon hovering around 90°. After today, it looks like we will get more than a taste of fall... we'll probably get a couple spoonfuls!

A strong cold front is set to glide across the region overnight. In addition to sparking a few showers and storms, it will change our wind direction to more of a northerly component. This is merely the beginning of a significant cooldown. To add to the wind shift will be an increase in cloud cover as well as some periodic wet weather. This should send high temperatures for the rest of the work week below normal. This could even continue into the upcoming weekend depending upon the flow in the atmosphere with all of these tropical storms slowing things down.

The graphic to the right is an image of the amount of moisture in the atmosphere in the mid-levels of the atmosphere. It is a prediction for Thursday afternoon. I typically use this measure of relative humidity (shades of green) to predict the cloud cover over a designated area. You can clearly see the area of low pressure, formerly known as Gustav, spinning over Oklahoma. It will eventually send quite a bit of juice from the same tropical storm that pounded New Orleans our way. If we get stuck under a large mass of gray on Thursday with numerous showers across the Stateline, that high temperature of 72° may be a bit optimistic. We could easily be confined to the 60s just two days after back to back highs of 90°! -ADAM
